Revealing the rich inner world of Punjabis and Punjabi heritage,
embodied in the Punjabi folk songs, Punjabi folk dances and
traditional Punjabi costumes, the Punjab Cultural Promotion
Council (PCPC) folk group rendered the best features and
traditions of Punjabis in general and Sikhs in particular,
during four international folk festivals in Ukraine.

Director and ISCA’s International Member, Mr. Davinder Singh
Chhina, in a candid chat with reporters told that the
combination of Punjabi music, folk songs, folk dances and
display of colourful turbans and folk instruments like Dhol,
Chimta, Bugchu, Chhikka, Khoonda, Dhadh and Katos etc. not only
created "Punjabi folk sensations" for the international
audience, but also enabled PCPC folk ensemble to display bright
concert programs. PCPC folk group bagged prestigious “Audience
Award” during world folk festival, organized by Lviv city
council at Lviv, Ukraine.
PCPC celebrating tenth
anniversary of its launch this year, had already got an honour
of participations in 75 seventy five world folk festivals
(Golden Jubilee participations/ Achievements/ festivals),
representing creative work of Punjab’s cultural traditions in
Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Serbia, Turkey, Australia,
Doha Qatar, South Korea, Slovak Republic, Czech Republic,
Denmark, France, Greece, Bulgaria, Taiwan ad Spain etc.
“Colourful Turbans and costumes
of Punjabis mesmerised the youngsters, attracted much attention
of Ukrainians, who flashed thousands of Cameras, appreciating
the exotic display of Punjabi group and expressing solidarity
for International friendship” disclosed Mr. Chhina.
Ukrainian students and PCPC’s
coordinators in Ukraine Ms. Ilona, Ms Nadia, Ms. Lena, Ms.
Svetlana and Ms. Marianna, collaborated with PCPC folk artists
by performing Punjabi dances and Bhangra in true spirit and
character of Punjab heritage, in these world festivals.
“Ukrainian damsels clad in Punjab folk costumes were cynosure of
all eyes there” disclosed Mr. Nitish the folk artist and student
of Govt. College for Boys, Ludhiana. Mr. Simranjiot Singh (Nankana
Sahib Public School, Ludhiana) Mr. Harshdeep Singh (Guru
Harkishan Public School, Ludhiana) and Mr. Jaspreet Rattu,
student of Bhai Devia Public School Haripur (near Noormahal) and
ace PCPC Choreographer Mr Rajpal Singh Raju (Ludhiana) brought
laurels to the Punjab state by participating in four Ukrainian
-world folk fests.
International folk groups from
Ukraine, Poland, Togo, Russia, Belarus, Macedonia and other
European nations also participated in these CIOFF world
festivals. “Punjabi folk artists enjoyed world class
hospitality extended by the festival organizers and different
municipalities of Ukraine”, remarked Mr. Chhina and Mr. Raju.
Ms. Marianna from Truskavet
termed Punjab dances 'energetic', Tanya from Chernihiv described
Punjab Artists as 'exotic' and Mr. Taras from Lviv termed them,
as the 'most colourful'. Mayor of city council Lviv, Mr Andriy
Sodor, honoured Mr. Chhina. Mr. Olexander the Director of
Chernihiv Administration also felicitated Mr. Chhina with
traditional painting of Ukraine. Ms. Svetlana and Mr. Viktor,
directors from Kylijie municipality cultural centre described
Punjab folk artists as “exceptionally talented and super”. Mr.
Olexander and Mr. Chhina signed memorandum of understanding (M.O.U.)
for International educational, cultural and sports exchange
programs between Punjab and Chernihiv, through PCPC and Cultural
centre of Chernihiv. Punjabi students shared their world class
experiences of the Ukraine tour with the media and appreciated
the Sight seeing tours of heritage city Lviv, Chernihiv and
beautiful city, Kiev. “We feel proud to have performed in
world’s top class and the prestigious Opera House Theatre of
Lviv, as the first Indian and Punjabi folk troupe there”,
disclosed Mr. D.S. Chhina.
