The Punjabi folk
artists from cultural troupe of Punjab Cultural Promotion Council (PCPC) are
back after participating in the world folk festival that concluded on July
17 in Turkey. The artists took Turkey by storm with their deft
performance of the Sikh martial art form Gatka and foot-tapping Bhangra,
Giddha, Malwai Giddha and Jhumar, informed PCPC Director Davinder Singh
Chhina in Moga on Monday.
The artists participated in three world festivals in Buyukcekmecee, Bursa
and Izmit cities of Turkey. Chhina informed that PCPC became the first
Indian folk ensemble to have participated in Golden Karagoz World Folk Dance
competition at Bursa city, where Punjab folk dancers impressed the
international audience.
The artists were again the apple of all eyes during the international folk
parade at Taksim Square in and Istanbul and such was the impact of Punjabi
culture that the stage anchor Seviley Serpi, former Miss Turkey, chose to
wear Punjabi attire during the festival.
Chhina added, "Turkish people were amazed to see traditional Punjabi dance
dresses and the instruments like tumbi, dhol, algoze and buggchu.
About 30 countries from across the globe participated in the event.
Many international students and folk groups wish to visit Punjab to learn
more about the culture and we are sending invitation to them explore Punjab
and participate in Punjab International Folklore Festivals organised by PCPC."
The troup to Turkey included Bansi Lal (percussionist), choreographer
Bhupinder Vicky, child artist Navraj Chhina, eminent painter and artist
Satnam Moga besides many other folk artists and students.
